Tammy, tell me about yourself, your personality, and your passion. How do you serve yourself? Also, how do you serve the community?
My name is Tammy. I am the Founder of Muscle In Motion Remedial Massage, located in Camden, NSW. I have been practicing massage therapy in this business for the past three years.
Remedial Massage Therapy is my passion, and at the heart of being given the privilege of treating my clients, I have a deep sense of passion and empathy for my clients and the pain and injury they may be dealing with. I love that massage therapy can be so transformative in a short time (dependent on individual factors) and that I can assist my clients in finding relief from pain, stress, and emotional distress.
I am a wife, Mum to adult children and a BiBi (grandmother)! I love time with my family and friends and the simplicity of lazy weekends and a soothing cup of tea.
I am passionate about staying active, and most mornings, I attend a gym session and play hockey as a goalkeeper. I am an extrovert and have a funny, warped sense of humour.
If I am not chilling out doing nothing, my ideal weekend would be a quiet weekend away somewhere secluded, a wine tour, or catching up with friends or family eating out, talking, and laughing the night away.
I appreciate Mukti approaching me and offering to collaborate on her blog. I hope the questions below that I have been asked answer some of the queries you may have about Remedial Massage Therapy. If you have any other questions, you would like answered or would like me to elaborate on anything, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any of the below correspondence after the answer to question 8!
8 Questions for Tammy
1. How Can Regular Massage sessions reduce stress and promote relaxation in our daily lives?
Massage therapy stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system, which triggers our bodies’ natural relaxation response through physiological processes.
These processes enable the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins, natural painkillers, and mood enhancers through our body. Our fight and flight response are reduced to allow us to feel calmer and more relaxed through the touch and pressure of massage.
Physical tension built up from daily activities can be released through massage, reducing cortisol levels (stress hormones) and assisting in the reduction of feelings of stress and anxiety.
While in this state of relaxation, we also become more attuned to our bodies and the sensations that our bodies respond to, increasing our body awareness and fostering a more mindful and present state.
Regular massage sessions also provide us with structured and dedicated time for self-care. Creating this time for yourself encourages a mindful break from daily stressors and establishes a healthy, holistic sense of wellbeing.
2. What specific techniques or approaches do you use during massage therapy sessions to address muscle tension and promote pain relief?
The techniques and approaches used during a session depend on the client's preference, discomfort threshold, the area of the body being worked on, how long the client has had the issue, whether the issue is a chronic condition, and many other factors that need to be considered.
At the appointment, I first discuss with clients what the issue is, how it has been affecting them, and whether any assessments need to be conducted.
This is done at each appointment. Even if the client has been for a massage treatment previously, it is essential to discuss what has changed, what in the therapy helped, what didn't, and whether any other areas in the body are being affected.
I can effectively treat clients with relaxation and remedial massage, which includes deep tissue, sports, and trigger point therapy. I am also trained in pregnancy massage and myofascial cupping.
3. How does massage therapy support overall physical health and wellness beyond relaxation?
To keep this question short, I will list various benefits below; however, remember that the benefits of massage therapy are not limited to just what is listed below.
Improved circulation aids in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to soft tissues while also facilitating the removal of waste products.
- Improved flexibility and range of motion – by stretching and lengthening muscles.
- Reduced muscle tension and stiffness – improving overall muscle function.
- Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation – by maintaining optimal muscle health.
- Improved posture – addressing imbalances in muscle tone, releasing tight muscles and promoting better alignment.
Improved sleep quality—Massage has been associated with better sleep quality by promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety. Because of reduced pain, sleep patterns have improved.
Pain Relief may alleviate muscle tension, headaches, and chronic pain conditions.
4. Can you share insights into how regular massage sessions can improve flexibility, range of motion, athletic performance, and support injury rehabilitation?
In short, massage therapy can positively influence flexibility, range of motion and athletic performance by addressing muscular and joint factors.
By treating muscle imbalances, promoting correct muscle function, applying joint mobilisation techniques, and manipulating muscles through muscle lengthening, massage can support and prevent injuries related to overuse and poor biomechanics.
Being proactive in this approach can lead to sustained flexibility in the muscles, help increase their elasticity and length, allow the client to move more freely, prevent movement restrictions, and likely reduce the risk of injury.
While on this topic, massage can also accelerate recovery by reducing muscle soreness and promoting faster healing.
5. How does massage therapy manage chronic pain conditions?
Chronic disease can be defined as a group of diseases that tend to be long-lasting and have persistent effects. Usually, the course of the disease lasts longer than three months.
Chronic disease can impact all individuals differently, depending on their circumstances, social and economic situation, age, comorbidity, and healthcare availability.
Chronic disease has an immense impact on mental health and quality of life. They are also the leading cause of illness, disability, and death in Australia. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).
The role of the massage therapist is to understand the illness/condition of their client and work in conjunction with their client's other medical professionals.
If a client presents with an issue that is not directly related to their condition, treatment can be based on the presenting issue, mindful of the chronic condition, and within the condition's parameters.
6. How does massage therapy contribute to emotional wellbeing and mental health, such as reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calm?
Massage therapy is a holistic approach to healthcare and, during treatment, addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of the body and mind.
The combination of neurotransmitter release (as detailed in question 1), elevated levels of these chemicals, and therapeutic touch can contribute to improved emotional balance.
Pain also has a negative impact on a person's mental health; therefore, being able to address pain in massage treatments can provide relief from the physical symptoms and, in turn, lead to a more relaxed mental state.
7. How often do you recommend clients schedule massage sessions to experience optimal benefits and results? How often do you get one?
There is no one answer to this question.
As a therapist, I can recommend how often I would like to see a client, and this would depend on the issues present, how long the issues have been presenting without receiving treatment, whether any other healthcare professionals are involved in the client's treatment, how the client is responding to massage treatment, and the client's availability.
Ultimately, after I have given them some advice, it is up to the client to decide how often they would like their treatments. The majority of my clients continue with massage treatment after their presenting issue has begun to settle, at least once a month or bi-monthly, for maintenance treatments.
8. Something I Wish People Knew About Me? Also, the reason you got into this.
It is an absolute privilege that my clients trust me to be a part of their wellness journey! I understand that massage can be quite a daunting experience for some people, especially for the first time. I hope my clients see my compassion and empathy for not only their presenting issues but also for them as people. I take my position as a massage therapist very seriously and treat my clients with the utmost respect and dignity.
I became a Remedial Massage Therapist after wanting a career change from being a teacher within the Child Protection profession. I have always been interested in the human body and its complex biological systems. I am fascinated by how these systems regulate our bodies and how external factors, environments, and behaviours can alter how well our body’s function. However, I was not prepared to begin another university degree at the time, so I found a Diploma I could complete at Tafe for Remedial Massage. This is also a pre-requisite of the Association we join.
I am an active member of The Association of Massage and Myotherapy. Being an active member allows me to keep my provider number to offer health fund rebates in my clinic. To keep my provider number, MMA requires me to keep several points per year and to gain these points, I must ensure my professional development is kept up to date.
Learning is never complete in this field of work, as therapists continually extend their professional development knowledge and portfolios through courses, webinars, conferences, etc., to learn new methods and information to better assist their clients.
Becoming a Remedial Massage Therapist is more complex than doing a course and starting to massage. There are many variables to keep therapists accountable and to continue our representation as valuable healthcare workers in the healthcare sector.
